How taxes work in Quebec for newcomers

Moving to a new province or country is already quite an adventure... and understanding the tax system can sometimes seem like a real headache. But don't panic! If you're new to Quebec, here's what you need to know to help you navigate the country.

💼 Who must file a tax return?

If you live in Quebec and earned income in 2024—no matter how small or occasional—you are likely required to file two tax returns :

  1. A federal return (to the Canada Revenue Agency – CRA)
  2. A provincial declaration (to Revenu Québec)

Even if you have not earned any income , it is often beneficial to file your returns to access certain credits and benefits (such as the Canada child benefit or the solidarity credit).

✈️ What if you arrived during the year?

Don't worry! You simply need to declare your income since your arrival in Canada . The official arrival date (printed on your immigration documents) will serve as a reference.

Before this date, your foreign income does not have to be taxed , but you may have to report it to determine your eligibility for certain programs.

🧾 What documents do I need to provide?

To prepare your declarations, here are the most common documents:

  • The T4 (if you worked for an employer)
  • Relevé 1 (provincial equivalent of the T4, issued by Quebec employers)
  • Your bank statements (if you received interest)
  • Moving or tuition costs (in some cases)
  • Your proof of permanent residence or immigration status

📆 When should you file your declaration?

For the 2024 tax year, the deadline to file your return is April 30, 2025. If you or your spouse are self-employed, you have until June 15, 2025 (but balances are due as early as April 30). ➡️ 2024 tax deadline in Quebec
